As a local, family-owned and operated business we know a thing or two about moving with young children. Moving and packing is stressful enough, but imagine adding in the curiosity, and fear of a little one who might not be equipped to embrace the change. They might be moving away from the only house they’ve ever known. They might not know why their favorite stuffed animals are being packed into boxes, or why mom is decluttering by giving away once-prized possessions. It can be incredibly upsetting for young children, but it doesn’t have to be. There are ways you can make moving with young children fun and enjoyable for them and for everyone involved.
Making Moving with Young Children Fun
Preparation is key to moving, but more so when you’re moving with young children. By starting to talk to them a few weeks in advance about the big move will not only prepare them, but they might even start looking forward to it. There are a variety of books you can read to your young children which reflects what they might be feeling during big life changes like moving into a new house, making new friends in the neighborhood, or relocating to a different state. Your local library might carry children’s books about moving that your children will enjoy and understand. You can also put some music on, and dance and sing while you pack. Make it into a party!
Involve Them in the Planning
When you’re moving with young children, make it an adventure. Allow them to make decisions, and involve them in the overall planning process. It can be incredibly intimidating for young children to move to a new place, but it might be less scary if they’re given the room to take ownership. Give them boxes and the flexibility to pack their toys and books themselves. You can also ask for their input on arranging furniture and decorating the new home or space. Ask them what they think the new neighborhood will be like and what might be different. Make a to-do list and ask your child if the task has been completed yet. Engaging them during the move will give them a sense of ownership and control over the situation.
Saying Goodbye and Embracing Change
Saying goodbye is hard for young children. You should encourage them to take the time to say goodbye to friends, and stay in touch with their neighbors by exchanging contact information. Visit their favorite places in the neighborhood one last time and talk about the great memories they had there. It’s important to teach children to embrace change, but it’s also important to remember where they came from.
